Target Recalls 2.2 Million Scented Candles Over Break Hazard

Candles2

The popular department store, Target, recently recalled 2.2 million Threshold scented candles from its stores over a break hazard. According to the recall, the glass surrounding the candle could break when the candle is lit. This poses a risk to consumers of burn injury or laceration. The candles are inside of a glass jar. The flame of the candle can heat up the glass causing it to crack and break. This poses a major fire hazard to anyone who purchases the candle. The broken glass can also cause lacerations. Thus far, no injuries or fires have been reported because of the defective candles. However, if one of the defective candles causes a fire, it’s more than likely that Target and the company that manufactured the candles would be held responsible.

Targeted recalled the one-wick 5.5-ounce and three-wick 20-ounce candles which are exclusively available at Target stores. Target announced that they would buy back the scented candles and reimburse customers who purchased them. Target is warning customers not to light the candles due to the burn hazard.

Target said that it knew of at least 19 instances in which the candles cracked or broke. Of those, one customer suffered minor injuries as a result of the broken glass.

This recall comes 12 weeks after another recall involving the same brand

In May, Target recalled over 5 million of the same brand of scented candles. These candles had the same problem. The candle’s glass casing could crack or break when the candle was lit. The recall involved specific Threshold glass jar candles including the 5.5-ounce 1-wick, the 14-ounce 3-wick, and the 20-ounce 3-wick candles.

Candle lawsuits

As a product, candles are relatively safe. However, because they hold an open flame, things can occasionally go wrong. In the case mentioned above, you have a glass casing that cracks when the heat gets too high. However, other lawsuits have been filed against companies that produce candles as well.

In one case, a woman lit a newly purchased candle and the flames grew to 8 inches high. When she attempted to move the candle to her sink to extinguish it, the outer glass cracked and she burned her hands on the hot wax. The injured woman filed a lawsuit against the company that manufactured the candle alleging that the candle was unreasonably dangerous and caused injury. The complaint accused the company of design, manufacturing, and marketing defects. The woman claims that she was still recovering from the burns at the time of the filing.
