Sensio Recalls Steam Espresso Machines Due To Burn And Laceration Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of Bella Pro Series and Cooks Steam Espresso machines. According to the recall, the brew cup handle can forcefully eject during use causing the glass carafe to shatter, posing a burn and laceration hazard.
The CPSC is recommending that consumers immediately stop using the recalled espresso machines and contact Sensio for a full refund.
Sensio has received 18 reports of the handles ejecting, eight of which reported burn and/or laceration injuries.
The product was sold at JCPenny stores nationwide and online at BestBuy.com and JCPenny.com from August 2023 through January 2025 for between $40 and $60.
Exploding espresso machine injury lawsuits
While you don’t associate product liability claims with espresso machines, these devices have been known to explode on occasion. This can pose a substantial burn and laceration hazard to anyone in the room at the same time that the espresso machine explodes. The glass carafes can explode without warning. This can cause damage to your home or serious injury to you or your loved ones.
If you have been burned or cut by an exploding espresso machine, you may be able to file a personal injury claim under the theory of product liability. Espresso machines are not supposed to explode. When they do, it’s almost always the manufacturer’s fault. You can file a personal injury lawsuit against both the manufacturer and the retailer who made the product available in the stream of commerce.
Injuries caused by defective, exploding espresso machines
Common espresso machine injuries include:
- Burns – When an espresso machine explodes, scalding hot liquids are propelled across the room. This can result in major burns, blistering skin, melted skin, and permanent scarring. The burn injuries may be bad enough to require skin grafting, antibiotics, and could lead to an infection.
- Lacerations – When an espresso machine explodes, it could cause the carafe to shatter and fly across the room. This leaves an individual vulnerable to the possibility that glass shrapnel leads to bleeding, cuts, and stitches.
- Scars and skin discoloration – Severe burns leave a victim’s skin susceptible to becoming permanently discolored. In addition, you can get scars from the burns or the broken glass. Such injuries could require surgery and future medical care.
- Property damage – The exploding contents of an espresso machine can cause property damage to the surrounding objects. As an example, coffee could shoot out of the machine and spray the ceiling, walls, and other objects.
- Wrongful death – Thus far, no one has been killed by a defective espresso machine. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Nor does it mean that the company that produced the machine isn’t liable for the death.
