Igloo Coolers Recalled Due To Finger Amputation Injuries

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of Igloo’s 90-quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers due to a hazard associated with the tow handle. According to the recall, the two handles can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, resulting in fingertip amputation and crushing hazards. Essentially, the tow handles’ design creates a pinch point that can trap and injure fingers. Igloo has received several reports of injuries, including amputations, bone fractures, and lacerations. The recall covered over one million coolers and was later expanded to include an additional 130,000 coolers in the U.S. and thousands more in Canada and Mexico. Igloo is offering a free replacement handle to consumers who purchased their product.
What other products have caused pinch-point injuries?
If your finger is amputated by a defective product due to a pinch point injury, you can file a lawsuit against the company that manufactured the product and the company that sold the product, placing a dangerous product into the stream of commerce. Companies are strictly liable for claims arising from pinch point injuries. Igloo would be on the hook to compensate anyone who lost part of their finger due to its failure to address the pinch point problem. But it’s not the only product that has caused pinch point injuries. The following are examples of other products that have been recalled due to pinch point problems.
- Coleman Converta Camping Cots and Suspension Stretchers – This product was recalled because the backrest adjustment mechanism had a pinch point that could injure the user’s fingers, leading to lacerations and amputations.
- Graco and Century Baby Strollers – This product was recalled after certain models had defective hinges that could pinch a child’s fingers.
- True Living Sling Loungers – This product, sold by Dollar General, was recalled because it could collapse unexpectedly, potentially trapping and injuring the user’s fingers in the metal folding joints.
- IKEA Folding Beach Chairs – This product was recalled due to a risk of finger entrapment. If the chair was incorrectly reassembled after washing the fabric seat, it could create a pinch point, leading to injury.
- Generac portable generators – This product was recalled due a handle design that could cause pinch injuries, leading to amputations.
- Mainstay Metal Folding Chairs and Barstools – This product was recalled primarily due to a fall risk caused by welding failures. However, the products were also noted for causing pinch injuries to consumers.
- Clip-on Table Top Chairs – Some models of these chairs were recalled due a lack of plastic spacers that could cause pinching, lacerations, crushing, or amputation of children’s fingers between the metal bar and the clamp.
