CPSC Recalls Multifunctional Puzzle Crab Toys Due To Risk Of Serious Injury Or Death From Ingestion Hazard; Sold Exclusively At Walmart.com

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of Multifunctional Puzzle Crab Toys due to violations of federal rules regarding toy magnets and a risk of injury from ingestion. According to the CPSC, the recalled magnetic Multifunctional Puzzle Crab Toy set violates the mandatory federal regulation for magnet toys, posing a major ingestion hazard. If a high-powered magnet is swallowed, the magnet can become attracted to another ingested magnet or a metal object and become lodged in the digestive system. This can then result in perforations, twisting, and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and death.
The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the recalled Multifunctional Puzzle Crab Toy, keep it away from children, and contact the manufacturer, JinJiang Baimei to receive a pre-paid label to return the recalled magnetic pieces for a full refund. JinJiang Baimei and Walmart.com are notifying all known purchasers directly.
The toy was sold exclusively by Walmart.com from November 2023 through January 2025 for around $27.
No injuries have been reported.
Magnetic toys are extremely dangerous if ingested
Toys containing small magnets have caused dozens of serious injuries among children who swallowed the toys. In the case of Magnetix Magnetic Building Sets sold by Mega Brands, there have been at least 1,500 reports of magnets separating from the plastic toy parts. This led to one death, one aspiration, and 27 intestinal surgeries all from one product.
If the magnets are swallowed, they can attach to one another causing perforations or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract. This condition can be fatal. The CPSC said surgery was necessary in all but one of the reported cases.
Toy magnets linked to 7 deaths and 2,400 hospitalizations
The CPSC recently discussed a serious concern regarding small, powerful magnets found in certain toys. The warning comes amid growing concern after seven deaths were reported and approximately 2,400 emergency room visits between 2017 and 2021, which were all linked to the ingestion of these magnetic toys. Such incidents have sparked widespread alarm.
The CPSC’s recall announcement focused on the dangers posed by these pea-sized magnets. If ingested they can cause major internal organ damage, including intestinal perforation, blockage, blood poisoning, which can potentially lead to death. The risk is made that much worse when the magnets are swallowed along with other metal objects. The magnets and metal objects can attract one another inside of the body, causing further problems.
