CPSC Recalls APOTHEKE’s Pumpkin Ginger 3-Wick Scented Candles

Candle3

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of APOTHEKE’s Pumpkin Ginger 3-Wick Scented Candles. According to the CPSC, the flame can burn too high and cause the candle to ignite and the glass container to break, posing a fire, burn, and laceration hazard. The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled candles and contact APOTHEKE to receive a full refund in the form of an APOTHEKE online store credit or a check. Crate & Barrel is also contacting all known purchasers directly. After the refund request is submitted, the CPSC advises consumers to immediately discard the candle.

APOTHEKE has received six reports of the candle’s flames burning too high. Four of these reports mentioned minor property damage, including singed surfaces, and one minor burn to a consumer’s hand.

The recalled candles were sold at Crate & Barrel stores nationwide and online at crateandbarrel.com from June 2024 through January 2025 for around $80.

Walmart sued over dangerous exploding candles

The retail behemoth, Walmart, is facing a class-action lawsuit filed by a plaintiff who claims she was injured due to a candle that she purchased at Walmart. According to the plaintiff, the wax in the candles is capable of burning too hot, catching fire, and even exploding. Attorneys for the plaintiff believe that there may be more victims who have been injured by the dangerous candles.

Yes, it is possible to sue a retailer and a manufacturer who sells defective and dangerous candles to the public. You must be able to prove that you used the candle in a manner that could be easily predicted by the company that manufactured it. Walmart is on the hook for the defective candles because they failed to disclose the dangerous defect to customers prior to their purchase. The plaintiff’s lawsuit also claims that Walmart failed to recall the defective candles even though they knew that the candles could cause injury.

The plaintiff contends that she was burning the candle for about an hour before it caught fire and produced flames high enough to cause soot to form on her ceiling. The plaintiff reported being worried that her house was going to catch fire. She noticed the flames did not appear to be entirely coming from the wick. She decided to transport the candle to her kitchen sink. The plaintiff alleges that there, the candle exploded causing second-degree burns to her skin in a fiery explosion that sent wax flying through the room. The lawsuit contends she was burned in her thigh area.
