Bowflex Recalls Adjustable Dumbbells After Consumers Complain Of Serious Injuries

Dumbbells2

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently announced the recall of Bowflex adjustable dumbbells due to a serious safety hazard. According to the CPSC, the weight plates on the BowFlex 552 and 1090 can dislodge from the handle during use. This poses an impact hazard.

The core issue related to the recall is that the weight plates, which are part of the adjustable weight system, can unexpectedly detach from the handle while in use. When the weight plates detach, they can fall on the user’s foot or other part of their body, leading to injuries.

The recall was initiated after consumers filed numerous reports of injuries with BowFlex. According to the recall, the company received 337 reports of the plates dislodging, including 111 incidents that resulted in injuries, such as:

  • Concussions
  • Abrasions
  • Broken toes
  • Contusions

The recall involves an estimated 3.8 million units.

Other recalls related to dumbbells

BowFlex isn’t the only company facing lawsuits and recalls over its dumbbells. Besides BowFlex, there is at least one other recall related to adjustable dumbbells: FitRx SmartBell XL Quick-Select Adjustable Dumbbells. Tzumi Electronics recalled the product due to a very similar issue as the BowFlex dumbbells—the weight plates can dislodge during use.

The FitRx SmartBell XL recall was initiated after over 60 reports by consumers indicated that the plates dislodged, causing at least seven injuries. Reported injuries included bruises, contusions, and abrasions. These dumbbells were sold exclusively online at Walmart.com from September 2023 through June 2024.

Consumers have been advised to stop using the recalled dumbbells immediately and contact Tzumi Electronics for a free repair. The repair includes a new dumbbell handle and storage tray.

Filing a lawsuit against a dumbbell manufacturer

Dumbbell manufacturers have a duty of care to ensure the safety of their customers. In this case, they failed. The weight plates in both cases were prone to dislodging and falling on the user as they used the dumbbells. It’s important to state that the users were using the dumbbells in a manner that could be readily anticipated by the company that manufactured them. Through no fault of their own, consumers were injured during use. These injuries are entirely the liability of the manufacturer and retailer that placed the dangerous product into the stream of commerce.

When a dangerous product causes injury to a consumer who is using the product in a way that can be readily anticipated by the manufacturer, the injured consumer can file a personal injury product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer and the retailer. The Florida product liability lawyers at Halpern, Santos, & Pinkert have represented clients in product liability lawsuits and recovered damages on their behalf.
