More Than 21,000 Power Banks Sold On Amazon Recalled Due To Reports Of Fire And Explosion

21K

We can hardly live our lives anymore without the use of lithium-ion batteries. While these batteries usually function fine, a defective battery can explode, cause fires, and injure or destroy property. Recently, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of over 21,000 portable power banks sold by Amazon in another example of damage and injury caused by lithium-ion batteries.

CPSC announces recall of NEWDERY power banks

On September 24, 2026, the CPSC issued a recall of about 21,380 NEWDERY power banks. According to the CPSC, these power banks contain lithium-ion batteries that can ignite or explode. The agency points out that the defect can cause fire and burn hazards for consumers.

The recall includes NEWDERY power banks with model number ZHX-PB22, which are black and have yellow cables. On the front side of the recalled power banks are the words “NEWDERY” and “ZHX-PB22” engraved. The back side only has the model number.

According to the CPSC, the power banks were sold exclusively on Amazon from October 2023 to November 2024 for between $27 and $50.

Explosion, burn injury, and property damage exceed $2 million

The recall was issued after a number of reported incidents due to the malfunction of the power banks. Consumers reported nine incidents of explosions and ignition that led to one burn injury and a fire resulting in $2 million worth of property damage.

These reports confirm how dangerous the power banks are. A portable power bank can be used almost anywhere, including at home, in your car, at work, at a hotel, and many other places where there are flammable items. In addition, these power banks can be found inside backpacks, purses, or other enclosed spaces.

Generally speaking, lithium-ion battery fires can happen fast, leaving you with little time to react.

What should you do with the recalled power banks?

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled NEWDERY power banks and contact the company to receive a full refund. They do not recommend disposing of the recalled devices in the trash or recycle bins.

Lithium-ion batteries must be properly disposed of. According to the CPSC, consumers need to check if there is a local household hazardous waste center that accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries.

In addition, consumers should pay attention to warning signs that the battery is malfunctioning. High temperature, swelling, strange smells, smoke, hissing sounds, or any physical damage to the battery is an indication that it is or could malfunction. Such batteries should not be charged or used anymore.

What happens if I’m injured by a defective lithium-ion battery?

If you’ve been injured during an incident involving a defective lithium-ion battery, you can file a lawsuit against several liable parties to receive compensation. Defendants in such cases can vary depending on the particular circumstances of the accident and relevant state laws.

Lithium-ion battery fires can cause serious burns, disfigurement, smoke inhalation, and several other injuries. Such fires can also cause serious damage to homes and personal property.

If you’ve been injured by a defective lithium-ion battery, you should keep all possible evidence, including the device, the purchase receipt, photographs, medical records, and any other evidence related to the fire. A defective lithium-ion battery attorney can investigate the accident and determine your legal recourse.
