Injuries Reported As Segway Launches Major Recall In April And May; Lawsuits Ensue

Recall5

Segways, which are considered motorized vehicles in Florida, have been the subject of several recalls and lawsuits. Consumers have been injured by malfunctioning Segways. These consumers are entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit against Segway and any retailer who made the vehicle available to the public. In this article, the Florida product liability attorneys at Halpern, Santos, & Pinkert will discuss the Segway recall and lawsuits filed by injured consumers.

CPSC announces major recall of Segways

In March 2025, Segway and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a broad-scale recall of approximately 220,000 Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP Kickscooters. According to the recall, a defective folding mechanism could collapse mid-ride, resulting in a major fall hazard.

Thus far, 68 incidents have been reported, including 20 injuries that ranged from abrasions, bruises, and lacerations to broken bones.

The impacted units were sold between January 2020 and February 2025 at retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, Amazon, and also through Segway’s own website, Segway.com.

Segway has offered to send free maintenance kits to tighten and properly maintain the folding lock mechanism. Segway has not offered returns, refunds, or replacements.

Cicero v. Segway Inc. (Case No. 1:25-cv-00369-UNA – Delaware Federal Court)

This lawsuit was filed in Delaware by a Boston resident. According to the plaintiff, he was injured when the scooter’s stem collapsed while he was riding it. This resulted in a dislocated shoulder, a torn rotator cuff, and a fractured shoulder.

The plaintiff claims that the scooter was sold as “safe, reliable, and durable,” but in truth, it held a critical defect that rendered it dangerous. The plaintiff has made several claims against Segway, including false advertising, fraud by omission, unjust enrichment, breach of implied warranty, and violation of consumer protection laws.

Sabu & Holmes v. Segway Inc. (Case No. 1:25-cv-00394-UNA – Delaware Federal Court)

Shortly after the Cicero case was filed, two plaintiffs filed a class-action lawsuit against Segway, arguing that the recall was inadequate, since Segway refused refunds and replacement options. They claim the defect causes the scooters to collapse mid-ride, which can throw riders off the vehicle at speeds of up to 20 mph.

Hanson v. Segway Inc. (Western District of Washington)

This lawsuit was filed in Washington after initially being filed in California. The plaintiff claims that he purchased a Mac G30LP in July 2021 from Amazon. The claim alleges that Segway’s do-it-yourself maintenance kit remedy is insufficient given that Segway advertised their vehicles as “safe and stable,” which misrepresented the quality of the product.
