HydroJug Children’s Sport Tumblers Recalled Over Choking Hazard: What Parents Need To Know

WaterBottle3

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has just announced the recall of HydroJug 14-ounce children’s sport tumblers. The recall states that the product has a design flaw that can cause a choking hazard. According to the CPSC, components of the product can loosen or detach. This creates a small swallowable object that poses a choking hazard in children.

What products are affected?

This recall applies to roughly 17,000 HydroJug sport tumblers. The tumblers are sold in five popular patterns. These include Cowgirl, Daisy Checkers, Dinosaur, Sport, and Bows. These products were available at major retailers and online from May through June 2025. At the bottom of the tumblers, you can find a serial number (235101). However, some recalled units might not display the serial number at all.

The recalled tumblers were sold at around $25 at stores including Academy Sports, Scheels, Gordons Ace Hardware, Bucks Ace, and Kents Grocery. They were also sold online at sites like HydroJug.com, Amazon, and iHerb.com.

What exactly is the safety issue?

According to the CPSC, the problem is with the rivets on the handle of the tumbler’s lid. The recall notice explicitly states that these rivets can loosen over time and subsequently detach from the lid. This creates a small swallowable object that poses a choking risk to young children.

At this point, there have been 656 reports of rivet failures. On the bright side, no injuries have yet been reported. Parents are advised to take the tumblers away from their children and contact HydroJug for a refund.

What should consumers do?

For parents who have one of the defective tumblers, the CPSC and HydroJug recommend that they take the following steps:

  • Stop using the lid – Parents should immediately stop using the product’s lid especially around very young children.
  • Contact HydroJug for a replacement lid – In this case, the remedy the company is pursuing is to replace the lid with a safer version. They should email HydroJug at service@thehydrojug.com with their order information. This includes the shipping address and photos showing either the serial number or the empty spot on the bottom of the tumbler where it should be.

Similar recalls and recurring safety themes

This is not the first time that children’s tumblers or other liquid containers have been recalled due to a choking hazard. Any loose parts, small detachable components, or poorly secured handles or lids have prompted several recalls over the years. In the case of products that are marketed specifically for children, there are substantial safety standards that prevent products from losing their components. If a child were to be injured because of a loose component on a product, the company is very likely to be responsible, especially when the product is marketed to kids.
