Cosco Recalls 2-Step Kitchen Stepper Due To Fall Hazard

Cosco recently issued a nationwide recall of the Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Stepper. The recall affects approximately 302,000 units that were sold at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and several major online retailers. The product was sold from February 2021 through July 2025. Prices ranged from $56 to $70. 11,000 units were reportedly sold in Canada.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall after several injuries were reported. These injuries stemmed from a faulty safety bar. The CPSC is urging consumers to stop using the product immediately and contact Dorel Home Furnishings to get a free repair kit.
According to the CPSC, “The safety bar can detach or break while in use, posing serious fall and injury hazards to consumers. There have been 34 reports of the safety bar detaching and two head injuries so far.
Step stool injury lawsuits
Step stools, in general, are relatively simple tools. They have, however, been the subject of numerous product liability lawsuits due to design defects, manufacturing errors, or inadequate warnings that lead to collapses, falls, and injuries. Such lawsuits fall under the umbrella of product liability law, which allows consumers to file lawsuits and seek compensation from manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.
Step stool failures and resulting injuries can be caused by several issues. These include defects in materials or design, manufacturing errors, and worn or damaged parts such as missing or worn “feet”.
This isn’t the first step stool to cause injuries
There have been several notable step stool recalls in recent memory. The recalls were initiated amid safety concerns. Notable examples include Topfun Folding Step Stools, which were recalled for instability and reported collapses. In addition, Onasti Toddler Tower Stools, Ballard Designs “Stafford” step stools, Kennedy International Folding Step Stools, and Target Wood Step Stools with Storage were all linked to various injuries from tipping or collapsing.
Onasti Toddler Tower Stools
These step stools were recalled on March 13, 2025, because they were unstable and posed a risk of collapsing or tipping, which caused fall and injury hazards, including traumatic brain injury. The CPSC received four reports of the product collapsing or tipping, which resulted in two injuries, one of which was a brain injury to a toddler.
Topfun Folding Step Stools
These step stools were recalled on February 29, 2024, because they can collapse or tip over, posing a fall hazard. Topfun received 39 reports that the step stool collapsed, tipped, or had some form of instability with 13 injuries resulting from the defect. These included concussions, fractures, and soft-tissue injuries.
