Florida Traumatic Brain Injury Attorney

Brains injuries are often the most serious type of injury, as the brain defines you as an individual. Traumatic brain injuries occur when an external mechanical force hits the brain and causes damage. These injuries are almost always very complex and have a wide array of symptoms, classifications, treatments and prognosis. Each traumatic brain injury is unique to the person and may have life altering and catastrophic consequences. This makes a traumatic brain injury different from all other injuries because it affects one’s personality and cognitive ability, contact our experienced Florida traumatic brain injury attorneys today.

A traumatic brain injury can be classified based on the severity – mild, moderate or severe. If the brain injury is classified as mild, the chance of a permanent long–term affect is less likely, although still possible. If the classification is moderate, then there is a 65% chance of permanent brain damage, while if severe, then there is a 100% chance of the individual suffering from permanent disability.

Depending on the severity and nature of the traumatic brain injury, the course of treatment can vary substantially. Immediately following the brain injury, it is essential that the individual be taken in for emergency treatment so as to prevent any further damage and to make sure the patient is stable. Even the transportation to the hospital is vital to the long–term recovery of the patient, particularly in regards to preventing the rise of intracranial pressure, which can lead to permanent brain damage and potentially death.

After the patient is stable, he or she is usually transferred to a rehabilitation unit, where the time and remaining treatment vary greatly depending on the severity. If the brain injury is very severe, so much so that the individual loses his ability to function in society and live or think on his or her own, he or she may need to spend many years, if not the remainder of his or her life in a treatment facility. On the other hand, if it is a more mild brain injury, the indivudal may only need to spend a few days at a rehabilitation center. The prognosis oftentimes depends on the duration of the coma or unconsciousness, the age of the individual and the post–traumatic amnesia that may result.

A traumatic brain injury can result from any type of impact to the head/brain. The most common cause of a traumatic brain injury in the United States after firearms is motor vehicle accidents followed by falls.
