Key West and Monroe County
Key West is the southernmost city in the United States. It is the county seat of Monroe County, which has an estimated total population of approximately 80,000 people. Interestingly, Key West is closer to Cuba than to Miami; it is 129 miles southwest of Miami and only 104 miles north-northeast of Havana, Cuba.
Key West is known as a popular tourist destination and frequently visited by cruise ships. The famous writer Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West and his house, the Ernest Hemingway House, is one of the more popular tourist attractions in the area. A concrete buoy found on the southernmost tip of the island with the label, “Southernmost Point Continental U.S.A.,” is another tourist draw and provides a direct view of Cuba, as it is only 94 miles away from the Cuban mainland.
Duval Street is the most recognized street in Key West, as it houses many of the cities famous restaurants and bars including Sloppy Joes, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and Hog’s Breath. It runs north and south through the cities “Old Town” and is considered the primary business district of the area.
Key West has always been an important military base in that it connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and accordingly has been referred to as the “Gibraltar of the West.” It is also home to the Key West Naval Air Station, a vital naval aviation training station as it is used year-round due to the ideal weather.
